A famous Gangster at the Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple / Favourite image no. 1

Words cannot adequately describe the excitement I felt when I took this image, the chap in the white suit is probably Hong Kong's most famous alleged GANGSTER, he goes by the name of the "Shanghai Boy".

It took a good few minutes to set this shot up by the way once I had spotted him, he was treated like visiting royalty by the employees of the Temple.

I love the Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple by the way, it is fabulous and for a photographer it is the stuff of dreams..... but I digress.

A number of things you need to know about the Shanghai Boy:-

  • he is always being investigated by the Police - but nothing sticks

  • he is always surrounded by 4 or 5 "heavies" who are I guess his bodyguards

  • he probably thinks his luck at avoiding jail is down to his frequent visits to this wonderful Temple to appease the Gods and to rub the right deity.

This should really be in your top 3 of things to do in Hong Kong and naturally I can make it happen., your personal, private Hong Kong Tour starts right here.....

This is a typical crowd at Chinese New Year (or for Wednesday Night Horse Racing at Happy Valley) it is simply an amazing spectacle, there are so many people burning incense (or joss sticks) that there is always a huge cloud of smoke hanging over the Temple.

It really does not matter what day you visit the Temple it is always busy and it has a real buzz to it, which to me makes it a must visit.

Naturally I can take you to the Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple on your private tour of Hong Kong.

There are plenty of people out there (local Chinese included) that think a place like this is for superstitious old biddies and down on their luck poor folk... I can assure you that this is NOT the case, over the years I have observed tens of thousands of people here and a huge cross section of Hong Kong society passes through the gates everyday along with visiting Chinese people from all over the world as well as many non Chinese tourists.

This Temple (to me anyway) has a huge influence in Hong Kong and is part of the very fabric of society here and you mock it at your peril.

I just love the place and I love the neighborhood that it is in and by the way, even as a non Chinese local I am always made to feel very welcome by the friendly staff who appreciate the efforts made by the private guide community in Hong Kong to explain local culture to visitors.

..... oh - and one of my favourite things to do in Hong Kong is too shake the sticks!! this has had a profound influence on my life over the past few years.

Oh my golly gosh, the simply amazing Pagani Zonda Absolute - this is a custom made car and is rumoured to be the only one of it's kind in the world and it is in Hong Kong!... oh... and yes, this is my picture, talk about being in the right place at the right time.
